The International Horn Workshop 45 is coming up in about a week. It is always fun to see the latest gear and music in the exhibits, hear great players from around the globe, and meet up with old friends. This year I will be playing as an alumni with the University of Alabama horn ensemble and judging the quartet competition.
However, I'm most excited about premiering a work I commissioned from Vince Norman, formerly an arranger with The US Army Field Band and an all around awesome guy. I asked Vince to do some variants on the Sarabande from Bach's fifth cello suite. As requested it definitely features the low horn and even passes through a bit of swing and a pedal C before returning to the original cello part. To follow and contrast this I'm doing a brief "patriotic spectacular" by Brett Miller. America! is a short romp through a handful of popular American tunes, exactly what one might expect from a hornist who frequently wears a military uniform.
